GENERAL OVERVIEW

Andorra

Andorra is a small state located in the Pyrenees between France and Spain. The capital of the country, Andorra la Vella, lies in a surrounded basin. In this city, founded at the beginning of the 9th century, tourists are especially interested in the Church of St. Armenol (11th century), the seat of government “House of the Valleys” (16th century), many buildings in the medieval style and handicraft workshops.

The heart of the city is the Barri Antique (Old Quarter), which lies on the site of the former village from which Andorra la Vella grew. The pride of the area is the colorful Casa de la Val (“House of the Valleys”), built as the country’s parliamentary palace in 1702. Around the palace are the Sala de la Giustizia, the only court building in the entire country, the country’s parliament building, the Sala del Consell, in the upper floors of which there is a wonderful philatelic museum, as well as the castle-like house of Sete Panis (“Chest of the Seven”) Castles"). The cultural center of the city, the site of many ceremonies and a popular gathering place for locals in the evening, Plaza la Poble is also home to the State Theater and the Academy of Music. Be sure to visit the Church of Santa Coloma, the Church of Santuario de Meritsel and the largest medieval bridge in the country in La Margineda, near the capital.
